2006 Events / Speeches / Workshops:

  • Design for Lean Six Sigma Green Belt - Dec 11 thru 15, Canada
The last wave for this Fortune 100 company was completed.  The champions, and their sponsors were very appreciative of the way Rai Chowdhary coached them in this journey.  All participants graduated from the program.  This was a rare program since all the projects were R&D related.
  • Lean Business Enterprise - An Imperative for Indian Business
Conducted in Chennai, Mumbai, and New Delhi during Nov 2006 - the one day sessions were very well received by the audiences.  98% of the 112 attendees rated the seminar 3 or higher on a scale of 1 to 5 (3 = OK, 5 = Best).  95% rated it 4 or higher.  Many also commented they wanted a 2 or 3 day session. The seminar was a very timely event for Indian Business owing to the high demand for outsourcing services and manufacturing from Indian business organizations.  The challenge for them is to contain prices and still be profitable - something Lean can help achieve.
  • Lean and Six Sigma in Startup Company - Nov 13th., Salt Lake City, Utah
Our work with this startup is very exciting indeed.  Rarely does one get a chance to embed such principles at the ground floor.  Together with the management team we are building a company to deliver such performance right from the beginning.

  • Six Sigma Green Belt Part II - Nov 8th. thru 10th., Austin
Most of the participants have been progressing well on their projects, and
the company has reported an year to date savings level of over $400,000.  This has been accomplished with 8 projects that have been completed to date. Additional projects are on the way.  The rate of return is just about 200% in the first year, since each team has invested <=25,000 per project. All numbers quoted by the company have been certified by their finance department.

  • Statistical Process Control - Sep 7 and 8th., Austin
Participants rated the workshop above 4 (on a scale of 1 to 5) in all the categories.  It was an in house event for a Fortune 500 company - a producer of complex hi-tech equipment.

  • Six Sigma Green Belt Accelerated Part I - Sep 11 thru 13th., Austin
This too was rated above 4 by all participants (on a scale of 1 to 5). Participants benefited from the hands on exercises, and got a running start on their Green Belt Projects via in class coaching.  This is the 5th. repeat session of the event, and is testimony to the quality and value delivered by our programs.

  • Design for Lean Six Sigma - Sept 18th., Canada
An in house session for a Fortune 100 company - participants were coached 1:1 on their projects. These events have enabled all participants move speedily through their projects and certification, resulting in a win win for the company and the participants as well.  The company has asked Rai Chowdhary to come back for another wave starting next year.

  • Risk Analysis and Mitigation Protocol (RAMP(C)) for Managers and Executives - at NCQM - National Center for Quality Management, Mumbai, June 7th., was received very well by the participants.  One of them commented "Originally I was not planning on attending this workshop, but now I realize what I would have missed"...Prof. Bhonsale, Sardar Patel College of Engineering, Mumbai, India.

  • 3 Keys to Business Excellence - at S.B.M. Polytechnic Mumbai, India, June 8th., covered Lean, Six Sigma, and Theory of Constraints in an interactive session that drove home the concepts.  Participants enjoyed the session and have requested Rai Chowdhary to visit again with more offerings on similar topics in the future.

  • Value Engineering - at National Society for Professional Engineers, Boston, July 6th.  This 1.5 hour abbreviated session discussed the essentials of how Value Engineering can enable development of functional products at lower cost. Many participants wished the session was longer.

  • Accounting Principles For Engineers - National Society for Professional Engineers, Boston, July 6th.  This 1.5 hour introductory tutorial covered the different Financial Statements used by business organizations, the terms in the same, and how the line items in such statements are related to the actions of employees.  For the self employed engineers operating their own practice / business - a different way to manage their business was introduced.  All topics covered proved to be of tremendous utility to the attendees, and they requested NSPE to extend this seminar at the next offering to a 1/2 day event!

  • Design of Experiments - Introduction - at Austin, July 12.  Attended by engineers from the medical, semiconductor, and aerospace industries - the interactive session was engaging, entertaining, and educational at the same time.  One participant commented this workshop was the best of all he had attended to date - he had gone thru 2 DOE seminars earlier.

Design for Lean Six Sigma - Canada, May 8 thru 12.  The session focused on 1:1 coaching to assist scientists and engineers working on their Green Belt certification.  These coaching sessions add tremendous value via providing the after training support which is vital to making such initiatives successful.

DOE for DOE Phobics - at ASQ Cowtown (Fort Worth Chapter), April 28th., 1 to 2:15 PM.  This short session discussed why there is phobia about DOEs, and what can be done about it.  Participants enjoyed the discussion and hands on exercises increased the understanding of how DOEs can help conduct empirical studies much more effectively. Several participants commented they wanted a longer session.

Design for Cost Management, Design for Manufacturability and Producibility, Singapore Session, April 17 thru 20 was received very well by the participants with all scores rating 4 or above (on a scale of 1 to 5).  At the end of the workshop, participants worked in teams on a real part drawing - coming up with ideas / design changes to reduce the cost of the product.  The part's original cost was ~$240; with the ideas they learned in class they demonstrated a new design concept where the same functions could be attained for <$40.  The winning team received special treats as a reward - which made the event even more fun.

Root Cause Analysis - ASQ Austin sponsored this workshop during April 2006 - participants were introduced to conventional Root Cause Analysis methods on the first day.  Day 2 of the program covered rather unconventional ideas on Root Cause Analysis.  This was a thought shifting exercise for many.  Several points were presented that point out the futility and deficiencies in usual approaches - including the 5 Whys.  If you would like to learn more about how to avoid the traps we fall into, and how to find a way around these, call for an appointment.

Project Management - A fast paced short course (4 hours)  packed with the essence of Project Management was was offered to the members of ASQ Austin in April 2006.  Participants benefited very much from the key points covered, and asked that the next course be a full day event.

Risk Analysis - At the ISO 9000 Conference in Las Vegas on March 9th. Rai Chowdhary conducted a workshop on Risk Analysis and Mitigation Protocol (RAMP™).  This is a methodology that goes beyond the the traditional Risk Analysis approaches.  Several businesses - large and small have benefited from it's application with excellent results, three of which are as follows:

  • Small business makes it through the recent economic downturn and comes out stronger

  • Medical products startup company uses it to identify risks in the launch of new products - prevents costly slips, oversights, and implements mitigation to ensure smoother launch

  • Implant manufacturer uses RAMP to make decisions affecting existing products - this method surfaces over 200 risk elements, the traditional method had identified under 30.  Management gets a deep and wide perspective on the situation - enabling them make wiser choices on the future course of actions

Risk is present in everything - however, our ways of analyzing and managing the same are rather primitive.  A better way has been developed; and now you can benefit from the same as well.  If this is of interest to you and you would like a no obligation trial risk assessment of your product / project / service - give us a call...1-877-HOWNWHY.  You have nothing to lose - except hidden risks.

Performance Excellence
  - Rai Chowdhary became a member of the 2006 Board of Examiners for the Texas Award for Performance Excellence.  This award is patterned after the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, and leading (best of the breed) companies apply to qualify for the same every year.  So, what does this mean to you?  Here are 3 ways you can benefit from our experience:

1- Know from an authentic resource what Business Performance Excellence really is, how you can get on the journey, and what other companies have done in the past

2 - Very few organizations can offer services on both sides of quality - the soft (but strategically very important) side that sets the tone and direction, and the hard side that deals with data and analytics.  TEAM 2000 can now assist you in both aspects.

3 - Learn the "how to" of creating a balanced enterprise that can tide over near term turbulence - and last, even though the world is changing at a dizzying pace.

Six Sigma Black Belts tackle the Bottom Line - Is it a buzz-word?  A passing fad?  What is Six Sigma anyway?  Rai Chowdhary was interviewed by the Austin Business Journal on this topic, together with several other leading experts from Dell, Motorola, and General Electric.  See what they had to say about Six Sigma...

Quality Function Deployment, and Statistical Methods with Excel - Two workshops conducted by TEAM 2000 for ASQ Austin were very well received by all participants.  The event was held at TEAM 2000 training center in Round Rock over 4 Saturdays.  Both were conducted in a fun learning atmosphere, with lots of hands on exercises and games - allowing participants to use the experiential approach to learn these topics.  All sessions were conducted by Rai Chowdhary.

Six Sigma and Lean Manufacturing Panel Discussion What will be the key to surviving in the era of hyper competition?  How can companies (and countries) do the right thing for their customers (and citizens)?  Six Sigma is more than a training event - it is the way to run and manage "Processes" regardless of what kind of work is involved.  Lean will be indispensable as well...Rai Chowdhary participates in a panel discussion on the above topic at ASQ Austin, with Phil Flories as the moderator. Voice of the Customer 201
- If you enjoyed the previous article Voice of the Customer 101, you will like this one even better.  What does it take to ensure your customer will be really pleased with your product or service?  Why is it that some of the best designed and intended products fail miserably in the market place?  What went wrong with the Edsel, the Concorde, the Newton?  Could that happen to your product or service?  How come some of the Japanese cars with ho-hum styling outsell their American and European counterparts?  Read this article to get some ideas, and if you want to learn more, take the online class...at a price of  $5 it is a tremendous value.

Connecting Lean to Six Sigma - Should your company go the Lean route, or the Six Sigma route?  Many executives wonder if one is better than the other. Will they work together?  What are the conflicts / overlaps?  How should we navigate through this duality?
If this sounds familiar, it may be worth your while to have us present a seminar on the topic.  Call us today: 1-877-HOWNWHY, or 1-877-469-6949.

Seven Tools of Quality - Results from the use of Tools of Quality depend on
a) the inputs to these tools and
b) how the tools are used
You should also  know which tool to use when, and since these tools rely on "Data" - the results will reflect the "Quality" of data that were used. This in turn depends on the "goodness" of the Measurement Systems.  So, before using the Seven Tools of Quality, it is important that we perform Measurement Systems Analysis.
Tutorial on Seven Tools was presented at ASQ Austin by Rai Chowdhary on 1/13/05.

Six Sigma - Is one of the most important strategies your company / enterprise will need to succeed in the new world.  If you are not on the journey to adopting this within your company, you may be left far behind.  Do it before your competitors get it!

Yet, it is one of the most critical departments to ensuring an organization's success.  If you are in HR, what are some important questions you should be asking?
